It’s not uncommon to find Amie Antoniak, artist and owner of Artfulness, leaning over her counter with paper, chalks and paints strewn around as she works on a piece. This kind of informality and relaxed attitude to art is typical of Amie and her gallery. A mini café at the rear serves soft drinks, cakes and sandwiches, there’s chilled music and two large, extremely comfortable sofas decorating the actual gallery space. Even more welcoming is an under £50 section, perfect for people looking for an affordable introduction to buying original art. There is a massive range of work from artists all over the country as well as a good representation of local work. Canvases are shown alongside some sculptures, ceramics and textiles plus the obligatory fine art gift cards. You can even rummage through Amie’s A-level pieces and make her an offer! With plans to open in the evenings, Artfulness is an approachable gallery that makes viewing art a pleasure.

Believing that the word 'fresh' has become overused, and therefore redundant, in food marketing, The Balloon Tree pioneers the concept of 'superfresh'. This is no idle boast as fruit and vegetables served in the welcoming farm shop and café are just hours or even minutes old. This family business has been growing quality food on the surrounding land for the past 20 years and produce is walked or quad biked straight to the shop. Named after a famous tree in nearby Buttercrambe, The Balloon Tree feels like a traditional farm building, check out the farm implements on the walls, but one filled with utterly modern ideas. You'll want almost everything from a range including preserves, ice creams, frozen punnets of Whitecurrants, Redcurrants and Blackcurrants, rare breed meats, local honey and fresh, sorry superfresh, vegetables and fruit. With a loyal following, the Balloon Tree also has a cosy café serving homemade meals created by the granny of the family, according to her own secret recipes.

Ask about the origins of most of the foodstuffs in Castle Howard's Farm Shop and you either hear that it's from the estate or 'just five minutes down the road'. This is produce at its most local and, only a short drive from York, this farm shop is a must visit for anybody who cares what goes on their plate. Part of the Castle Howard estate but completely free to visit, the shop exudes the style and class of the Howard enterprise. You get real woven baskets to carry your purchases in and service is knowledgeable - the resident butcher has hand-selected all the meats on sale. Like us you'll probably spend more than you intended on the range of pickles, relishes, biscuits, fresh vegetables, estate reared beef and...well, the list goes on. You'll recognise some Yorkshire classics, Mrs Bells Blue cheese, Malton Goddess beer and Convivial Yorkshire Crisps all making an appearance. There is even a range of food books and elegant Burleigh china. Splendid.
