Bar 38

Bar 38

Yorkshire Herald Building
Coney St
York
YO1 9QL
T: 01904 674428

A combination of expansive river views and relaxed atmosphere makes Bar 38 one of York's busiest bars. Many of the young, well-dressed regulars come to drink and people watch in the evenings amid the chic and quirky décor, which includes a scene stealing curved staircase, unusual lighting and a smattering of modern art. During the day there's plenty of space to enjoy the food in the open-plan surroundings. The well-priced (and nicely designed) menu contains many of the standard lunchtime burgers, sandwiches and salads you'd expect from such a bar but there are some unusual touches - quorn makes an appearance and the range of anti pasti is surprisingly continental. Bar 38 provides an impressive range of cocktails, wines and champagne and the business types and stylish clientele come here to hobnob against the spectacular backdrop of the riverside views. Expect a busy and lively atmosphere on weekends and racedays.

A wide balcony makes the most of some stunning river views. Grab a menu and you’ll find a diverse and genuinely mouth-watering array of food, everything from the traditional Bacon Buttie to Balsamic Mushrooms with melted Dolcelatte Cheese and Rocket. A fair few British cities now boast a Ha! Ha! Bar and York's branch has bagged an enviable city centre location. This suits the lively, cosmopolitan atmosphere well and the mixed crowd typically includes office types having a drink after work. Decor is all pine floors, leather sofas with large windows, a lengthy bar and open kitchen giving Ha! Ha! a light, friendly look and feel. The usual beers and spirits are available as well as more unusual tipples such as Organic Cider and quirky cocktails like Passionfruit Cosmpolitan. Ha! Ha! prides itself on its attitude to food, using fresh, local produce and wouldn't mind being seen as a top-flight restaurant. The mix of meals is unconventional - Warm Chilli Beef Salad appears alongside classic Fettuccine - and prices reflect Ha! Ha!'s upmarket aspirations. Tending to get busy during weekends and evenings Ha! Ha! is, nevertheless, a great place for a lively drink and with plans to become a significant venue in the city, keep an eye out for forthcoming events.
